The Old West: A tour of Southeastern Arizona

Many visitors to Arizona don’t get past the Grand Canyon. As a natural wonder, it deserves a large share of the attention in this region, but there is excitement and adventure waiting to be discovered in other parts of Arizona. The southeastern part of the state is rich with Old West history and legend. So if you’re hankerin’ for a little adventure, strap on your spurs, and saddle up.

Small ghost and mining towns still thrive in Arizona, and the Old West comes alive with action and adventure, even today. Driving through the desert parks, it is easy to imagine how this land looked to the wagon trains of the 1800’s. Hot, dry and parched in the summer, the vegetation would have been unfamiliar and foreboding. Very little shade, and even less wood for a fire to chase away the drastic chill of the night. The Saguaro Cactus stand tall and abundant, and the mountains provided ample camouflage for the Indians of this region. The pioneers who settled this area were truly adventurous, and the legends they left behind still linger in the heat waves.
