Caught by Grandma
by
Sheri Wallace
If Morgan is sleeping when my mom comes over, she awakens and looks around until she can see her. My baby's first recognizing smile was for -- who else? -- her "grammy." I'm not complaining, she loves her mom, but we can't dismiss the special bond between Morgan and her grandma.
Perhaps my mom and daughter would have this closeness anyway, but every time my mom tells someone about how she was the first to touch "her dumpling's" sweet head, I can't help but think that I made a good choice.
It could happen to you
You have many choices when it comes to your labor and delivery. You can have music, aromatherapy, a doula, a midwife, or an obstetrician. You may even choose to have a homebirth or give birth in water. So why not choose who actually catches your baby? I believe that babies generally deliver themselves, and the lucky person at the receiving end just holds out welcoming arms. There are always cases where medical help is a necessity, but if you have a normal labor and birth, you can probably choose who will do the catching.
