Nausea: A Good Thing?
by
Sheri Wallace
Morning sickness doesn't seem to have a significant impact on most fetuses. "Many of our patients are worried about the effect of their limited diet on their developing fetus. However, unless she loses over six pounds, we don't generally worry about either the mother or the baby." She adds that a benefit of studies like this is the support the information gives worried mothers. "If this study is correct, women with moderate morning sickness can relax a bit, knowing that the morning sickness is in fact aiding the development of their baby."
Not so easy
Geena Williams says that even though researchers give morning sickness the thumbs up, she isn't convinced. "My doctor told me 16 years ago that morning sickness tended to indicate that all was well with the babies. And no, that did not make me feel better. I was miserably, desperately ill for most of both pregnancies and I knew plenty of people with beautiful babies who never felt even a moment's queasiness."
