Music: How important is it to
your child?

Ms. Kersey also notes that music allows children to communicate in a way that the spoken word does not. She notes that no one knows why a minor tonality makes the person hearing it feel melancholy. Or why a march can stir a crowd to battle or celebration. Or why the music of Handel and Bach make the listener feel happy and settled, comfortable and complete. "No one knows exactly why these things are true, but they work every time. This opens a wide range of communication for children who wish to communicate their feelings."

The Tucson Girls Chorus is open for auditions every spring. They currently accept girls in grades 2-8 for new auditions. Current members of the chorus may stay until they finish high school. Ms. Kersey says that the Tucson Girls Chorus teaches responsibility and discipline, building the girls’ self-esteem as they go along. The foundation for all of this is music.
