Redington Land & Cattle Co.

The first thing you need to know about the Redington Land & Cattle Co. is that you must travel to get there. Although it takes a dedicated visitor to brave the distance (you are really, really, in the middle of nowhere) a visit to the ranch is well worth the effort. The ranch is located at least 20 miles off paved roads (depending on which way you come to visit) and the roads are not necessarily in good condition. The drive through Redington Pass is spectacular, and although the road is at some points, well, let’s just say rustic, the view is worth every new rattle you put on your car. Unobstructed by city lights, signs or other cars you can see the desert in several elevations.

Upon arriving at the ranch, we were met by two huge, white dogs, who were as friendly as they were large. The owners of the ranch, Don and Barbara Steinman, are friendly and made us feel right at home. Redington Land & Cattle Co. is an authentic 1860’s cattle ranch and offers only one guesthouse plus bunkhouse accommodations. The courtyard area is centrally located to everything on the ranch, and it is immediately apparent that this is a real working ranch. Definitely not a tourist hotel or place to take a luxury vacation. The lodgings are immaculate, and very adequate, but this is not a resort. However, the ambiance of the ranch is world class. Quiet and soft animal sounds were soothing, and although we weren’t spending the night, I wanted to unpack my bags and spend a week just taking it all in.
