A Seasoned Investor Takes
The Long-Term View

With a broker in the family, it might surprise you to know that Dave doesn't use his father as his broker. "A few years ago he asked me to switch to a local broker who would be able to provide better planning, support and service. I live in Minnesota and my dad lives in California and he felt that he couldn't offer the same service as someone who was local."

Portfolio And Allocation Strategies

Dave, who is 39, says, "I have primarily long-term goals (beyond ten years) for two of my three portfolios." He divides his investments among the three separate portfolios, each of which he manages differently to match his goals. Here is how he has allocated his funds:

1. [45% of total investments] "Retirement" (consists of a Roth IRA, Traditional IRA and company 401k), which is primarily invested in stock mutual funds like energy, pharmaceuticals, technology, growth and some overseas funds, and which he anticipates will provide a 10-20% net annual return.
