New Superintendent Has High Hopes for the Future
Dr. Estanislado Paz, or Stan as he prefers to be called, appears to have settled into his role of TUSD superintendent quickly. Although he only officially began his duties on July 1st, clearly he has spent that time learning about the district and its families.
Paz comes to Tucson by way of the Sylvan Learning Systems. He was formerly the superintendent of El Paso, El Paso being Texas 5th largest school district. Long time residents may remember Paz, he attended the University of Arizona, and was an elementary teacher in TUSD, starting in 1971. Before leaving Tucson, he had risen to Deputy Superintendent.
Paz is eager to talk about his goals for Tucson. "I believe in building stronger relationships with all of the communities businesses, parents, and homes, with a laser-like focus on student achievement." This focus on student achievement is the cornerstone of what Paz hopes to accomplish at TUSD.
He is quick to add that he believes the first step to focusing on student achievement is improving reading skills. "No learning will take place without every student being able to read on grade level," emphasizes Paz. He adds that he will be visiting the classrooms this year personally, and will be performing personal assessments with students to see where their reading skills rate.
