all about tutors

Another difference between the Sylvan programs and tutoring is the basic structure. A tutor generally works one-on-one, while at the Sylvan programs the teacher works with 2-3 children at once. Kennedy says that this is helpful for children who feel pressure being the only student. "We allow for independent work, and there is interaction between the students, making this a good fit for students who feel pressured by the one-on-one relationship."

The cost for the typical Sylvan program varies, but Kennedy says that the lowest monthly payment plan is about $175 per month – with children staying in the program from 4-12 months.

What About My Gifted Child?

Both Kennedy and Strong emphasize that children having problems at school are not the only ones taking advantage of extra educational opportunities. "Gifted children fall through the cracks as much as children with learning problems," says Kennedy. If your child is gifted, the traditional school setting may not offer enough challenges, making tutoring or the Sylvan program an excellent option. Because Sylvan offers the ability to earn additional credits, students who wish to graduate early find it an attractive program, and Kennedy reports that the SAT and ACT prep courses are very popular. "We also offer speed reading, study skills, and time management courses which help students prepare for college."
